What You Need to Know About Puppy Mills and How You Can Help!
Have you ever seen a puppy at a pet store and wanted to bring it home? Have you gone online to look at puppies and picked out the perfect one to buy? Me too! I love animals so much that I want to bring them ALL home with me. But if you are an animal lover like me, then you need to make sure you know where your new pet is coming from. Puppies for sale in pet stores and from online websites can come from places called puppy mills.
Puppy Mills are buildings FULL of dogs- which sounds like a lot of fun! But instead of doggies running around and playing with toys all day, these dogs live in small cages their whole lives. They don’t get to go to the veterinarian when they are sick, they don’t get toys to play with, they don’t have names and they don’t ever get families of their own.
All a puppy mill dog wants is a family of their own, with a little boy or girl to give them a real name and to play with them in the backyard. You see- puppy mill dogs have never touched grass before! These moms and dads will spend their entire lives in a cage barely bigger than their bodies. Puppy mills might be sad for our doggie friends, but don’t forget that you can be their hero!
HERE ARE SOME WAYS YOU CAN HELP PUPPY MILL DOGS:
1. Tell your family, your friends AND your teachers about puppy mills! You can write a paper for class or give a speech to your school!
2. Write a letter to your local paper (Letter to the Editor) and tell the people in your town what puppy mills are and how they can help! We can also help you with this project and we can
feature your efforts on our social media pages.
3. If there are puppies in the store- WALK OUT THE DOOR! This is one of our favorite phrases at Bailing Out Benji. Pet store puppies are puppy mill puppies, and it is important to make sure you don’t support stores that sell them.
4. And lastly- ALWAYS consider adopting before shopping!
Maddie Belle spent 12 years in a cage as a puppy mill breeding dog. She now lives a fabulous life with her sister, Chanel!
